Scatophagus rubrifrons



Scatophagus rubrifrons is one of the subspecies of Argus. Under natural conditions, they live in coastal areas with brackish water on the border of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Fish are born in fresh water and then gradually migrate to salt water as they mature.

The back of the fish with a reddish hue, due to which it got its name. Argus reds are most attractive at a young age. The older the fish become, the less bright their coloration becomes, and the border spots on the body becomes blurred. Sexual differences are not expressed. It should be noted that the fish have poisonous spines on the fins, a prick from which is very painful, so when handling with fish be careful. In nature, fish reach a length of 30 cm, while in the aquarium their size does not exceed 15 cm.

Scatophagus rubrifrons is a gregarious fish. In the aquarium fish need to keep a group of at least 4 specimens. Most of the time the fish spend in the middle layer of water. It is possible to keep Scatophagus in a common aquarium with silver monodactylus, with which they look very good. By and large, Argus can be shared with all fish, large or comparable in size. Smaller sized fish in the same aquarium with red Argus are not recommended, as they will sooner or later be eaten.

Scatophagus rubrifrons are very active fish and they need a lot of free space to swim. Keep fish should be in an aquarium of 200 liters. At the bottom, it is desirable to arrange the grottos and large stones. Plants can land only artificial, as any living plant would be food for fish.

Young fish can be kept in fresh water, but the adult fish need brackish water (4 teaspoons of table salt in 10 liters of water).

Scatophagus rubrifrons omnivorous. With their feeding usually no difficulties, because they eat almost everything they are given. It is desirable that the total diet of fish at least 40% were food of plant origin.

Reproduction

In aquarium conditions Scatophagus rubrifrons do not breed. All fish are supplied to the domestic market from their natural habitat.
