Grammistes sexlineatus



Grammistes sexlineatus naturally inhabits the Indo-Pacific region. These fish can be found in the Red Sea, the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, along the northern coast of Japan, as far south as the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. Grammistes live in coastal areas near coral reefs, at a depth of 1-40 meters. During the day, fish hide under ledges and in small caves, and at dusk swim out of hiding places and begin to hunt small fish and shellfish. Young fish stay in the shallows, while adults prefer deep water.

Grammistes sexlineatus

Grammistes sexlineatus has a laterally compressed black-brown body, with six white or yellowish intermittent stripes. The fins are transparent, slightly brownish. Dorsal plumage is paired. The entire body of young fish are dotted with dark spots, which, when fish reach lengths over 5 cm, are replaced by black and light gray stripes. Eyes are large, mouth wide. Fish are hermaphrodites, which means they are initially born female, and then, as they mature, can change sex to male. In nature, fish reach a size of 30 cm.

Grammistes sexlineatus - a solitary, shy, timid, predatory fish showing activity with the onset of dusk. The fish has skin glands on its body, which contain gramistin (a toxic substance). In case of danger, the fish releases this toxin into the water, thereby scaring away the enemy.

In general, gGrammistes sexlineatus fish undemanding and quickly adapt to life in an aquarium. Keep these fish need to be singly. May be kept in a common aquarium with other species commensurate with or greater in size fish. One person aquarium needs a volume of about 300 liters. At the bottom must be placed large shelters, in which the fish can swim freely.
