Melanotaenia papuae

Melanotaenia papuae is naturally found in Papua New Guinea, within 35 km of Port Moresby, but the full extent of its geographic range has not yet been determined. These fish can be found in freshwater streams flowing through rainforests. These fish do not shine bright colors and meet them in the collections of aquarists can not often. Nevertheless, the fish are unpretentious and can be recommended to novice aquarists.

The overall body coloration of Melanotaenia papuae is olive green, over the middle lateral line and silvery white in the lower part of the body. The middle part of the body has a pair of black lines that become reddish or purplish in males and yellow to light orange in females. The coloration of females is usually less bright than that of males. In natural conditions, the size of fish reaches 8 cm, in the aquarium, they usually do not exceed 6 cm.

Melanotaenia papuae

Melanotaenia papuae is a peaceful gregarious fish. Keep fish preferably a group of at least 6-8 individuals in an aquarium of 250 liters. most of the time the fish spend in the upper and middle layers of water. Melanotaenia papuae no problems can be kept in a general aquarium with other peace-loving fish, spending most of the time in the lower layer of the aquarium. Melanotaenia papuae is very fast fish and quite often jump out of the water, so the presence of an aquarium cover is a must.

Water parameters: temperature 22-30° C, hardness dH 1-20°, pH 7,0-8,0. Requires filtration, aeration and weekly replacement of 1/3 of the aquarium water with fresh.

The perimeter of the aquarium is recommended to plant tall broadleaved plants, and on the surface of the water to place several bushes of floating plants.

Lighting requires a bright, intensity 0.8 W / L. The duration of daylight hours of 10-12 hours a day. It is desirable to give periodically an opportunity to direct sunlight into the aquarium (2-3 hours), but we must do it carefully, so as not to provoke the growth of algae on the leaves of plants.

Fish are omnivores and eat almost everything they are given. In order for their coloration to be as bright as possible, their menu should be as varied as possible. To enhance coloration to the main feed (lily, daphnia, artemia, dry food) you need to add specialized feed. It is noticed that when feeding fish frozen cyclops, their coloration becomes brighter.

Reproduction

Melanotaenia papuae reaches its sexual maturity at the age of 9-10 months.

In a spawning aquarium of about 60 liters is planted most nimble and brightly colored male and female with a full belly. Producers begin feeding a variety of foods several times a day.

Spawning is stimulated by a slight increase in water temperature relative to the one in which the fish live permanently. Spawning is prolonged and sometimes drags on for several weeks. Female fish spawn in the morning, hatching a total of up to 150 eggs. Immediately after spawning eggs should be placed in another container with similar water parameters, otherwise it is very likely that the producers will not resist the temptation to eat them.

The eggs incubate for 6-10 days. the larvae begin swimming on the 5th day after their birth.

Fry are fed live dust, infusoria, and after 1-1.5 weeks begin to give artemia and egg yolk pulverized into powder. Develop fry slowly. In the process of cultivation of fry to strictly control the parameters of water, not allowing her to pollute, so it will be possible to largely keep the stock of fry.

Life expectancy of Melanotaenia papuae in aquarium conditions is about 5 years.
