Betta falx

The Betta falx occurs naturally in the waters of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Large populations of these fish can be found in the central province of Jambi.

The fish inhabit forest swamps that are sometimes only a few centimetres deep. These areas are usually in the shade of trees and the sunlight hardly reaches the water surface. The water is stained with humic acids released by decomposing organics at the bottom and has a brownish colour. The bottom consists of a thick layer of fallen leaves, branches and underwater tree roots.

Betta falx

Although the Betta falx belongs to the fighter fish, they are by no means a bully. The fish are fairly calm and undemanding, they can handle even novice aquarists.

Males larger than females, have a lot of iridescent lines on his head, a wider head shape and elongated fins. The main body colour is grey. Faintly contrasting dark stripes run along the body from the head to the root of the tail plumage. The maximum size of the fish is 4-5 cm.

Falks cockerel fish amicable. Keep cockerels can be a pair or group of 1 male and several females in a species or general aquarium of 80 liters, together with other peace-loving fish.

The fish can be kept in the tank without bottom, which makes it easy to care for. If you want to keep fish conditions as close to natural as possible, it is recommended to place a leaf litter at the bottom of dried oak or beech leaves, as well as branches and snags of trees, forming shady places, which will hide roosters.

Water parameters: temperature 22-27° C, hardness dH 1-10°, pH 4.7-6.8. Filtration should not be too powerful. The aquarium should be covered or covered with a coverslip, as the fish need access to the warm humid air that will form above the water surface.

Betta falx

Like other species of the macropod family, Betta falx is content with dim light. Many plant species cannot grow in such conditions, so select shade-tolerant species such as the Singapore moss.

The diet of the Betta falx in nature consists of small insects and invertebrates. In an aquarium, they are fed with a variety of dried foodstuffs as well as live and frozen daphnia, artemia and chironomid moths. Dispensed food should be strictly dosed, preventing overfeeding, as they tend to obesity.

Reproduction

Significantly increase the chance of successful breeding Betta falx is only possible in a separate aquarium from the other fish. The aquarium should be tightly covered, because the future fry need access to warm, moist air, otherwise their labyrinthine respiratory organ cannot develop properly.

These fish do not build a nest. During spawning, the male wraps his body around the female's body, and the female hatch a batch of eggs at this time. The male immediately fertilizes the eggs and collects them all into his mouth. This continues until the female spawns completely.

The eggs incubate in the male's mouth for 9-12 days, after which the male releases the fully formed fry. After that, the producers can be transferred to another aquarium, although some reports indicate that they grow considerably faster when the fry are kept with their parents.

Betta falx

The fry are large enough and can easily deal with artemia nauplii. Feed the fry 2-3 times a day in small portions. To prevent intestinal diseases, the water in the aquarium with fry to update daily, substituting 1/10 of it with fresh.

The Betta falx have a lifespan of about 3 years under aquarium conditions.
