Microphis deocata

It is no exaggeration to say that the Microphis deocata Needlefish is the most beautiful freshwater fish from India. Under natural conditions, these fish live in clear water bodies at the foot of the Himalayas. Unfortunately, these fish are very sensitive to transport, they cannot tolerate poor water quality and cannot starve for long. Due to these high requirements Microphis deocata is very seldom imported, and only rarely are they kept in hobby aquariums. Keeping the fish is recommended for professional aquarists only.

These fish live in clear, brightly sunlit ponds with abundant aquatic vegetation. In an aquarium environment necessary to most imitate natural biotope by placing at the bottom a variety of different shelters and densely planted with plants all around the perimeter of the aquarium.

Microphis deocata

Microphis deocata in nature, as usual among the family of needlefish, the male plays the maternal role. He is significantly larger than the female. On the abdomen of the male has a brood sac, which incubates fry. The brood pouch resembles a multi-coloured sail. At normal times it is in a collapsed state and virtually unnoticeable, and the period of spawning and incubation of fry demonstrates a truly fantastic picture of the bright red and blue stripes.

The Microphis deocata needlefish is a very peaceful and peaceful fish. Due to their modesty, when contained in a common aquarium with other fish, can remain hungry, not keeping up during feeding for his, more agile, neighbours. Most of the time the fish spend in the thick of plants, remaining motionless for long periods.

Water parameters: temperature 22-28° C, hardness dH 10-30°, pH 7,0-8,5. Need quality filtration, aeration and weekly replacement of 1/3 of the aquarium water with fresh.

It is very important to allow direct sunlight into the aquarium without obstruction. Install the aquarium on the south side near a window. Sunlight is very beneficial for these fish. Artificial lighting should be bright. The duration of daylight should not be less than 12 hours per day.

Microphis deocata

The diets of these fish consist exclusively of live food. These fish feed on mayfly larvae and mosquito larvae. You should only feed your fish with frozen food in emergencies and should never consider it as a permanent diet. It is best not to purchase fish if you cannot provide them with live food.

Feed live artemia nauplii, daphnia and bloodworms to the fish. It should be noted that the fish take food only in the water column, they do not pick it up from the bottom. Feed the fish 3-4 times a day in small portions.

Reproduction

Microphis deocata fish needlefish become adults at body length of 8 cm or more. At this time, females have a colorful sail on their belly. But they become particularly beautiful when they reach a size of about 15 cm. At this time, the body of the fish takes on a greenish sheen. The eggs are incubated by the male. For 2 weeks, the eggs are near the tail section. Once the larvae hatch, they leave the body of their parent.

In aquarium conditions, breeding is very rare, and we have no reliable data on how to spawn these fish in captivity.

Microphis deocata

The life span of the Microphis deocata needlefish under aquarium conditions is 2-4 years.
