Iguanodectes geisleri

Iguanodectes geisleri redd in the wild inhabits the Amazon River basin, Brazil. The fish stay in small tributaries of the river with running water, with a substrate consisting of a thick layer of fallen leaves, snags and tree branches. The water has a brownish tint due to the presence of humic acids released during the decomposition of organic matter at the bottom. The fish takes its name from the German aquarist Dr. Rolf Geisler (1925-2012).

Iguanodectes geisleri

Iguanodectes geisleri has an elongated body of golden colour. The body shows a pair of longitudinal stripes of red and yellow running from the head to the root of the tail plumage. Adult males have red markings on their pectoral, anal and caudal fins. The females have no such markings. The size of the fish is 5-5.5 cm.

Keep Iguanodectes Geisler should be a group of 8-10 fish. In this case, the fish will be less shy and will exhibit a more natural behavior. It is desirable to acquire more females than males in order to disperse the attention of males, otherwise the males will provide excessive attention to females, not giving them peace.

A rectangular aquarium with a length of at least 120 cm and a volume of at least 150 litres is suitable for keeping fish. Coarse-grained river sand can be used as substrate. Large snags should be placed at the bottom and the perimeter of the aquarium should be densely planted with a variety of aquarium plants. Also, for maximum approximation to natural aquarium conditions at the bottom may be placed a bed of pre-dried oak or beech leaves. The decomposing layer of leaves will develop bacteria colonies, which provide good supplementary food not only for the adult fish, but also for the fry.

This type of fish is demanding of water quality and should not enter an aquarium where biological equilibrium has not yet been established. Water parameters: temperature 20-26° C, hardness dH 1-9°, pH 5,0-7,0. Requires filtration, aeration and a weekly change of ¼ of the aquarium water with fresh.
