Aulonocara sp. Stuartgranti Maleri, Sunshine Peacock Cichlid

The Sunshine Peacock Cichlid is endemic to Lake Malawi. The fish stay in areas on the boundary between rocky shores and sandbanks. Females and juvenile fish often swim in groups, while males form their own territories between the rocks, the boundary of which is marked by a sandbank.

Aulonocara sp. Stuartgranti Maleri, Sunshine Peacock Cichlid are popular fish among aquarists, which have a bright yellow body colour with a metallic blue colour at the bottom of the head. The males are larger and more colourful than the females. The females have an unassuming greyish or grey-brown colouration. The size of the fish is 9-12 cm.

The sunshine peacock is an aggressive fish. They will attack any fish with a similar colour pattern with a fury, which makes it necessary to sensibly select their aquarium mates. Keep peacocks sunny need a small harem, consisting of 1 male and 4-6 females.

The fish require an aquarium with a capacity of at least 200 liters. In the aquarium, the edges should be piled on large rocks, dividing the space between them with sand. Do not use as a substrate for gravel, as during feeding fish pass sand through the gills and then it can hurt them or even get stuck in them. The fish live in relatively hard water, so select plants that will function well in such conditions, e.g. anubias, wallisneria, etc.

Water quality plays a major role in the life of sun peacocks, as they are very sensitive to variations in the chemical parameters and should never be kept in an aquarium in which the biological equilibrium has not yet been established. Water parameters: temperature 25-29° C, hardness dH 8-25°, acidity pH 7,5-9,0. Requires enhanced filtration with a canister-type water filter, aeration and a weekly change of at least 1/3 of the aquarium water fresh.

The diet of the fish should consist of Artemia nauplii, chironomid and dry food with spirulina. The fish take food from the bottom by sifting sand through the gills, so they should only be given food that sinks to the bottom. The food needs to be fed in small portions 3-4 times a day.

Reproduction

During spawning, the female collects all the eggs into her mouth, where they are incubated. It is desirable to pair several females with one male for spawning. This will negate the aggressiveness of the male, as he will be busy courting the females.

During the spawning season, the male starts courting the females. When one of the females shows interest, she swims up to him and swims out a batch of eggs on the stone surface and immediately collects the entire clutch into her mouth. She then swims up to the male's anal fin and he immediately releases a batch of milk. The female opens her mouth and the milk reaches the eggs, fertilizing them. The eggs incubate in the female's mouth for 4 weeks. The fully formed fry leave the female's mouth. For the first days of their lives, they feed on the substances in their yolk sacs. From day 3 onwards, the fry are given nauplii of artemia.

You have to keep in mind that all species of Aulonocara will hybridise with each other, so to keep the species pure, you should keep only one fish species in the same tank or keep only the males.
