Neolebias ansorgii

Neolebias ansorgii can be found in the wild from Benin to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The fish can be found in wetlands, small ponds and slow-moving channels densely overgrown with aquatic vegetation. The fish was first described in 1912. The Anzorga neolevias are rarely available commercially, due to their fastidious habitat. They are recommended for trained aquarists.

Neolebias ansorgii has an attractive body colour that shimmers in all colours of the rainbow in the reflected light. Male orange-red coloration with a wide horizontal dark band on the body. Fins with dark edging. Females pale blue. Males are slightly smaller than females. Maximum size of the fish is about 3.2 cm. It should be noted that keeping the fish in unacceptable for them conditions, they lose their attractive coloration, which as a result of this is reflected in their popularity among aquarists.

Neolebias ansorgii

Neolebias ansorgii is a peaceful and rather timid fish. In order to make these fish feel comfortable and exhibit a more natural behavior, it is recommended to keep them in a small flock. These fish can also be kept in a common tank with other, preferably comparable in size, peaceful fish.

To contain Neolebias ansorgii suitable aquarium volume of 50 liters, which can contain a group of fish consisting of 6 specimens. The aquarium should be densely planted with floating plants. At the bottom can be placed a few shelters in the form of snags and stones.

Water parameters: temperature 24-29° C, hardness dH 1-8°, pH 5,0-6,0. Filtration, aeration and a weekly change of 1/5 of the aquarium water with fresh water. Place pieces of peat in the water filter element.

Sand should preferably be used as a substrate. Pre-dried oak or beech leaves may be placed at the bottom, which should be replaced by new ones every 2-3 weeks.

The menus of the fish comprise a variety of live and frozen foods. The fish are fed with artemia nauplii, daphnia, chironomid moths. You can accustom fish to dry food, but live food should prevail in the overall diet, as only in this case, you can achieve an attractive coloration in fish.

Reproduction

Neolebias ansorgii reaches sexual maturity at about 7 months of age.

Neolebias ansorgii breeds very rarely in aquarium conditions.

For spawning fish use a spawning tank smaller in volume than the main tank. At the bottom of the spawning tank is placed separator mesh. Female, depending on its physiological state of spawning 100-300 very small eggs. Immediately after spawning, the spawners are removed.

The eggs are incubated for 24 hours. After this time, the larvae hatch out. The fry begin to swim and eat on the 2nd or 3rd day of their lives.

Feed the fry live dust at least 4 times a day. With proper nutrition fry grow very quickly.
