Canthophrys gongota

Canthophrys gongota, the gongota loach naturally inhabits water bodies located in the Brahmaputra and Ganges river basins in Bangladesh and Nepal. The fish stay in the banks of slow-flowing rivers. The substrate in these areas is sandy, though fish can also be found on gravel substrate. There is very little aquatic vegetation and sometimes none at all. During the rainy season, the water in the river gets significantly murky, while during the rest of the time it is relatively clear. Even beginners are able to keep these fish while maintaining the correct water parameters.

The Canthophrys gongota have an elongated body. The head is large. The eyes underneath have small spines. The body is colored light gray with random dark spots. In the area of the head these spots merge into one large spot. In contrast to the males, the females are slightly larger and have a more rounded abdomen. The maximum size of fish in the wild is 13 cm, and in aquariums, their size does not exceed 10 cm.

The loach gongota is a peaceful fish, but should not be kept together with small fish, as they are very active and simply drive all fish away. At the same time, avoid co-habitation with slow fish with voile fins, e.g. cockerels and guppies. Choose peaceable fish from the upper and middle layers of the water.

Keep the Anthophrys hongotes in a group of at least 4. When keeping single fish may become withdrawn or overly aggressive towards neighboring fish. There are also problems when keeping the fish in pairs or groups of 3. In this case, the dominant fish may stress the other fish to such an extent that they can no longer eat.

Use a mixture of coarse-grained river sand and gravel of various sizes as substrate in the aquarium. Place large boulders and snags on the bottom so that they form several shaded areas for the fish to hide in.

Water parameters: temperature 16-21° C, hardness dH 1-6°, pH 6,5-7,5. Need quality filtration, increased aeration and a weekly substitution of 1/3 of the aquarium water with fresh. Fish are very sensitive to the accumulation of organic matter in the water. Also create a slight water current in the aquarium by routing the drain nozzle of the water filter along the back wall.

The Canthophrys gongota feed on insects, crustaceans and small fish. In an aquarium fish are fed live and frozen Tubifex, bloodworms, clam meat, crushed earthworms, a variety of sinking dry food.

Reproduction

Under aquarium conditions Canthophrys gongota does not breed. Fish are shipped to the domestic market from their natural habitat.
