Hypsophrys nicaraguensis

The Nicaraguan cichlazoma lives naturally in the waters of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The fish can be found in lakes and quiet backwaters of rivers.

Male Hypsophrys nicaraguensis has a pale blue or golden-pink body colour. The fins have a golden hue and bluish edging. The colouration of the females is more contrasting than that of the males. Males develop a small occipital ridge and genital nipple as they mature. There are also some differences in the body pattern; females retain a black lateral stripe, while in males it is reduced to a single spot on the sides. The males are larger than the females, measuring up to 25 cm, while the maximum size of the females is about 20 cm.

Hypsophrys nicaraguensis

The Hypsophrys nicaraguensis is a relatively peaceful cichlid. These fish are territorial and fairly large. Preferably keep fish in pairs in a species aquarium. A pair of fish requires an aquarium volume of 200 liters. Perhaps the content of fish in a common aquarium with other non-aggressive fish, such as barbs, catfish and harakinovymi, but in this case the length of the aquarium should be about 2 meters.

Numerous shelters in the form of snags, ceramic pots, placed on the side and boulders should be placed in the aquarium. Use fine sandy gravel or sand as substrate. Nicaraguan cichlazomas often dig in the ground, especially during the spawning period, so all plants in the aquarium should be well rooted, and their root system is further strengthened by large flat stones.

Water parameters: temperature 23-28° C, hardness dH 8-20°, pH 7,0-8,0. Requires filtration, aeration and a weekly change of 1/3 of the aquarium water with fresh water.

Hypsophrys nicaraguensis

Nicaraguan cichlazomas are generally omnivorous fish. You should aim for a varied diet. The fish are fed dry flake and pelleted food, frozen bloodworms, shrimp, earthworms. A vegetable supplement in the form of blanched spinach, lettuce and dried sprulina is also required. Feed the fish once or twice a day.

Reproduction

Successful breeding Hypsophrys nicaraguensis in the aquarium environment depends on creating a strong pair of fish, but it's not an easy task, because the fish are very aggressive towards each other. To create a strong pair, you must first buy a group of young fish of 7-8 individuals and give them an opportunity to naturally separate into pairs. Once the pairs are formed, and it will be evident by the fact that the fish are separated from the flock and begin to protect their territory, they are left in the aquarium, and the remaining fish are removed. Fish pairs are formed for life.

In nature, Hypsophrys nicaraguensis spawn in tunnels dug in coastal areas of a river or lake, but in the aquarium for this use is suitable for the size of the cave. The female picks up the spawning spot. Spawning takes place at night. The female takes care of the eggs and fry, while the male protects the area from other fish.

The eggs incubate for 2-3 days and after another 3-5 days the fry begin to swim and feed freely.

During the first days of life, the fry are fed nauplii artemia, and then begin to give dry flake food.

Life span of the Hypsophrys nicaraguensis under aquarium conditions is 10-15 years.
