Lophiobagrus cyclurus

African bullhead, lives naturally in the African lake of Tanganyika. These fish were first discovered by naturalist A. Lestrade in 1937.

Four species of Lophiobagrus live in Lake Tanganyika: L.cyclurus, L.aquilus, L.asperispinis and L.brevispinis. The fish differ in body, tail plumage and the length of the nasal antennae in relation to the eyes. African gobies have a crepuscular lifestyle, hiding among rocks during the day and swimming out into open areas as darkness falls.

Lophiobagrus cyclurus

Lophiobagrus cyclurus has a short, laterally compressed body. The eyes are small, subcutaneous. The body coloration is gray-black or brown. The abdomen is creamy-white. Tail and dorsal plumage with distinct edging. Sexual differences are not expressed. The maximum size of the fish is 10 cm.

Lophiobagrus cyclurus is the smallest representative of its genus. Claims that this fish releases toxic mucus when stressed is based on one statement Pierre Brichard "Fishes of Lake Tanganyika" (1978), but there is little evidence that this poses a real danger to aquarium neighbours.

It is advisable to keep Lophiobagrus cyclurus in an aquarium of 80 litres or more, with a sandy bottom and plenty of hiding places in the form of stones, snags and coconut shells. Take care of a free area on the bottom for the fish to swim freely. The lighting is poor.

Lophiobagrus cyclurus

Keeping Lophiobagrus cyclurus in a common tank with other Tanganyika catfish and cichlids larger than 2.5 cm in length is possible, as they may otherwise fall prey to attacks.

Water parameters: temperature 23-26° C, hardness dH 15-30°, pH 7,5-9,0. Need quality filtration, aeration and weekly replacement of ¼ of the aquarium water with fresh. It is desirable to create a small current of water in the aquarium.

The gobies are unpretentious about the menu and eat almost all live, frozen and dry food. In nature, the fish feed on beetle larvae and small crustaceans. The fish are fed once a day after dark.

Reproduction

The Lophiobagrus cyclurus rarely breeds in aquariums, however, to achieve its spawning some aquarists have.

Lophiobagrus cyclurus

Apparently, a pair of producers are spawning in a rocky cave. The larvae hatch after about 4-5 days. The parents do not take care of their young, so immediately after spawning the spawners are moved to another aquarium.
