AQUARIUM WATER PURIFICATION WITH A REVERSE OSMOSIS FILTER

The water in the aquarium should be changed periodically. To ensure that you get clean water with the right composition, you can use household filters with reverse osmosis. Purified water can easily be brought to the desired conditions by adding special salts.

Tap water does not always conform to our ideas about high quality, let alone fish. Most of them need neutral or weakly acidic softened water. This is exactly what you can get with the help of reverse osmosis filtration systems.

Features of Reverse Osmosis Technology

The idea of using reverse osmosis to purify water used to fill aquariums is not new. But 10 years ago, its application was complicated by the fact that even a simple household reverse osmosis water filter was unreasonably expensive. Today the situation has changed, and such devices have become more affordable, and their maintenance is easier. They can be used both for drinking water in the preparation of drinks and for replacing water in an aquarium.

The idea is simple:

  • Clean the water of all the impurities that are there. Remove all salts, chlorine, bacteria and viruses. Get almost distilled water;
  • After purification, add mineral compounds to bring the water to the desired conditions. In some cases, the original tap water can be added;
  • Let the water stand in a tank with the aeration system on to oxygenate it.

For these tasks are perfectly suited models with a storage tank, with a useful volume of 8 to 10 liters. They do not take up much space under the kitchen sink and are easy to maintain. About every six months you will need to check the condition of the cartridges and, if necessary, replace them. Particular attention should be paid to the filter modules of mechanical purification, if the original water is often rusty, as well as carbon cartridges, if the water has a characteristic chlorine smell. Condition of the membrane is assessed by reading the TDS-meter - it should be replaced on average every 3-5 years.

Freshwater and Marine Aquariums

The use of water purified by reverse osmosis for saltwater aquariums is a must. This is how to ensure the absence of nitrates, phosphates, sulfates in aquarium water. Special salt in the amounts specified by the manufacturer is dosed into the water prepared in this way.

High water purification is also important for freshwater aquariums. These conditions are valuable for invertebrates. Reverse osmosis removes, among other things, heavy metal salts that are harmful to crustaceans and snails.

Of course, specifically buy such a filter only for the aquarium is not always appropriate. But it does not have to, because it can always be used in everyday life: to make coffee, tea and soups on clean water is much healthier than the one that is risky to fill the aquarium.
