Astatotilapia desfontainii



Astatotilapia desfontainii is now a very rare fish in nature. It is on the verge of extinction and lives in the freshwater reservoirs of Algeria, Tunisia and North Africa.

These fish are unlikely to be found in pet stores. They may occasionally be offered for sale on a limited basis via online websites. Keeping these fish is recommended for trained aquarists.

Astatotilapia desfontainii have a flattened body. The head is large. There are 3-9 egg spots on the anal fin. The caudal fin is rounded. Males are olive green in color. In the reflected light, their body shimmers with iridescent colors. Males are more brightly colored than females and slightly larger than the latter. The size of males reaches 15 cm and females 12.5 cm.

Reproduction

During the spawning period, the male Astatotilapia desfontainii digs a hole in the substrate at the base of a large rock, where the female subsequently spawns. After the peculiar nest is made, the male attracts the female to it by twitching his body and circling around her. Spawning is portioned, the female hatches a few eggs and immediately collects them in her mouth. This continues until the female spawns completely. Then she swims up to the male anal fin and bite it, stimulating the release of milk to fertilize the eggs.

The eggs are small. The eggs incubate in the female's mouth for 18 days. The female takes care of the fry, from the time they are born, for about two weeks. The male, immediately after spawning the female immediately loses interest in her.

In total, the female is able to bear up to 50 fry.
