Astatotilapia flaviijosephi

Astatotilapia flaviijosephi naturally inhabits the Jordan River basin flowing in Jordan, Israel and Syria, as well as Lakes Muzairib and Kinneret. The fish stay in shallow waters with rocky bottoms and dense aquatic vegetation. As a result of environmental pollution, these fish are on the verge of extinction in nature and have therefore been listed in the International Red Book. These fish are very rare to find in collections of aquarists.

As with many other cichlids, the coloration of Astatotilapia flaviijosephi depends on sex, age and emotional state. The body is silvery or silvery yellow with dotted orange stripes and a transverse dark line under the eye. When stressed, about ten dark gray transverse stripes appear on the body of the fish, and during the spawning period, two longitudinal stripes appear. Males have several yellow egg spots on their anal fin.  Males are larger than females. The maximum size of fish reaches 12.8 cm.

An aquarium of at least 100 liters is necessary to keep the fish. In this aquarium can contain 1 male and 2-3 females. When keeping several males need a much larger volume of the aquarium, delimiting the bottom of the territory of large stones and stiff-leaved plants to reduce the likelihood of battles between males for the selected territory. A mixture of sand with fine gravel is used as a substrate.

Water parameters: temperature 20-28° C, hardness dH 10-20°, pH 7,0-8,0. Requires filtration, aeration and weekly replacement of 1/3 of the aquarium water with fresh.

Fish menus in nature consist of small invertebrates, snails, fish fry, and plants. In the aquarium, fish are fed live and frozen artemia, daphnia, and bloodworms. Also give the fish flake food containing spirulina. The food is given 1-2 times a day.

Astatotilapia flaviijosephi breed in the wild during the spring and summer. Females are capable of spawning several times per season. Usually, fish become sexually mature when they reach a size of about 4 cm (females) and 5 cm (males).

During the spawning period, males become very aggressive and territorial. Female lays eggs in a pre-excavated in the ground a small hole. After the male fertilizes the eggs, she collects all the eggs in her mouth. The eggs are incubated in the female's mouth for 3-5 weeks, depending on the water temperature. At 20° C, incubation takes twice as long as at 27° C. Fully developed fry, about 0.8-1.4 cm in size, leave their mother's mouth. For the first 2-3 days of life, the fry hide in the female's mouth at night.

Juveniles kept at 26 to 28° C grow twice as fast as those kept at 20° C.
